Boxpark Birmingham gets planning permission

Boxpark has received planning permission for its new location in Birmingham.

Street food, events and bar operator Boxpark has received planning permission approval for its new location in Birmingham.

Located in Digbeth, the group has signed a 15-year lease in the Floodgate Street Arches, with the opening set for next year.

Investing around £5m into the local area, the new opening is expected to create approximately 200 new job opportunities.

This new scheme will be the first Boxpark in the Midlands, following the recent openings in other major UK cities, including Liverpool, which was the first Boxpark-branded development outside of London (Shoreditch site pictured above).

Championing local business

Known for its street food offering, independent traders and events, Boxpark's new venue aims to champion local Birmingham businesses and talent with opportunities for both independent and established food operators, as well as artists, creators and performers from the area.

The food hall will sit under four 12m railway arches, spanning nearly 17,000 sq ft and is set to include around 10 kitchen units and four internal bars set across two floors. In addition, there will be just over 10,500 sq ft of external space to offer al fresco dining and events.

The approval from planning authorities marks a key milestone for the project’s development and the brand’s expansion in the UK.

"We’re thrilled to have received planning approval and are excited to move forward with the opening of our new site in this vibrant city," says Ben McLaughlin, chief operating officer of Boxpark. "This will be a big project for the team and our aim is to carefully restore the Floodgate Street Arches while giving it a new lease of life.

"Digbeth's eclectic and creative business community is perfect match for our ethos of supporting and championing local, independent talent. This marks an exciting new chapter for Boxpark, and we look forward to contributing to the area’s continued growth."
