Cat & Wickets pub set to reopen after fire

A gastropub in Melton Mowbray will reopen its doors to the public on Monday 26 June, after it was destroyed in a fire in June 2022.

The Tap & Run, located in Upper Broughton, is gearing up to welcome its first customers in the coming weeks, after a spend of £1.3m on restoring and renovating the pub following the fire, which broke out after laundry ignited in a tumble dryer.

The pub forms part of The Cat & Wickets Pub Company, owned by cricketers Harry Gurney and Stuart Broad (pictured). Its sister site, The Griffin in Swithland, was named Leicestershire Pub & Bar of the Year as part of the 2023 National Pub & Bar Awards.

"We are really looking forward to opening our doors once again and welcoming guests back to the Tap & Run," says Gurney, MD of the business. "A large team of people have worked really hard on the pub’s restoration and renovation. While it was devastating to have to close our doors due to the fire, it has given us an unexpected opportunity to make some improvements which we know our customers will be delighted with."

The majority of the original Tap & Run team will be returning to the venue, led by the management team of Jack Whitehead, Anna Mooney and Laura Symington.
