Tim Martin knighted in Honours List
The founder and chairman of J D Wetherspoon plc has been knighted.
Tim Martin, the founder and chairman of J D Wetherspoon plc, has been knighted in the New Year Honours List.
Martin (pictured) has received the honour for his services to hospitality and to culture.
He is the only hospitality representative to receive a knighthood in the latest Honours List. However, chefs Simon Rogan, Adam Handling and Jeremy Lee have been awarded MBEs.
Ewan Venters, CEO of hospitality group Artfarm, the group behind The Audley pub in Mayfair, has been given an OBE for his services to international trade.
"Above all, Wetherspoon’s success has been due to a team effort over 44 years," says Martin on his knighthood. "Very many thanks indeed to the customers, colleagues, suppliers, designers, contractors and others, present and departed, who have contributed to this honour."
Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, says Martin's recognition is wonderful news.
"It is wonderful news that Sir Tim Martin, such a stalwart of the great British pub, has been awarded a knighthood for his amazing contribution and achievements to the pub sector and wider hospitality, especially given the recent challenges of the Covid pandemic and cost of living crisis."
