Classics still leading consumer cocktail demand
Classic cocktails still remain the order of choice from guests.

Despite the drinks innovation and signature serves from bartenders across the UK, new research has revealed that classic cocktails still remain the order of choice from guests.
According to CGA by NIQ’s latest Mixed Drinks Report, the Pornstar Martini remains the nation's favourite cocktail, with Sex on the Beach the second choice, Aperol Spritz third, followed by Long Island Iced Tea and Expresso Martini.
What's more, the on-going demand for cocktails looks set to continue this year, with one in five (21%) consumers enjoying them, making cocktails the fourth most popular drinks category after soft drinks, wine and lager.
Last year saw a 3.3% rise in the number of hospitality outlets selling cocktails – the first increase since 2021. This coincides with the growth of industry cocktail showdowns, such as the Classic Cocktail Competition, which returns for its third installment later this year.
Tequila, it makes them happy
While the research shows that vodka-based drinks are still the firm favourite, tequila-based cocktails have gained in popularity.
Appetite for experimentation is particularly high in tequila-based cocktails and spritzes, while 67% of consumers have tried no- and low-alcohol alternatives, the report says. The research also reveals that 30% of cocktail consumers take a photo of their drink and post it on socials every time, or almost every time, they have one.
Cocktail menus have the most influence on consumers’ decision-making, with 64% citing them as a factor in their choice, while promotional deals and the atmosphere of the venue being the next most important drivers. Value, as well as quality, are also crucial, with 25% of consumers saying they are more likely to buy cocktails if they were better value for money. Cocktail consumers expect to spend an average of £10.08 on their drink.
"With spirit sales seeing a year-on-year decline through 2024, cocktails are a great way hospitality venues can revive spirit sales," says CGA client director Violetta Njunina. "They’re also a valuable gateway drink, with more than a quarter of consumers trialling a category and brand for the first time through a mixed drink."
