South Downs gem reopens in Fittleworth
Angus Davies has restored and relaunched The Swan Inn, Fittleworth.
A 14th century coaching inn has been restored and relaunched by an acclaimed operator, bringing a brand-new offer to the village of Fittleworth.
Located in South Downs National Park, The Swan Inn has been refurbished by owner Angus Davies, known for his posts at Chez Bruce, Lorne, Sorrel and the Bib Gourmand-awarded The Hollist Arms.
The work has seen the restoration of 12 appointed ensuite bedrooms, a cosy pub and a 46-cover dining room offering a menu of seasonal country classics.
"We’re so excited the doors to The Swan Inn are open once again," says Davies. "The restoration has been an incredible journey, and it’s been wonderful to see the pub filled with locals already. Our aim is simple: to create a welcoming, reliable and unfussy space where guests can enjoy good food, great drinks and a comfortable bed."
History in the making
Originally established in 1536, The Swan Inn has a history as a retreat for travellers, royal courtiers, and writers and artists such as J.M.W. Turner, John Constable and Rudyard Kipling.
The inn’s storied past is reflected in its restored interiors, where guests can still find artwork exchanged for bed and board centuries ago. The inn’s guestbook, once signed by Kipling, remains a legend and the operator says a reward awaits anyone who uncovers its whereabouts.
Menu items include lighter bites of Spenwood gougères, devilled kidneys on toast, crispy artichokes with aioli and sage; and a £9 cheeseburger will always be offered at the bar.
Larger dishes include Suet crust South Downs venison and bacon pie; and wild mushroom, celeriac and ricotta cannelloni. There will also be sharing plates such as a whole shoulder of South Downs lamb; Huntsman Pond pudding with Jersey cream for two to share; choux bun with honeycomb parfait; Bramley apple sorbet; and towers of profiteroles.
Away from the food, easels and paints will be on hand to guests who would like to admire the countryside around and try their hand at painting in the footsteps of Turner and Constable.
There will also be a star-gazing experience available to guests, as the pub is situated near one of the best dark sky spots in the UK.
