Bigmouths Kitchen wins big at the Street Food Championships

Multiple awards were handed out at the Street Food Championships on 26 November at the Big Penny Social in London.

Todd Turner from Bigmouths Kitchen was the big winner at the 2024 Street Food Championships, the annual event which brings together street food businesses from across the UK.

In competition with 12 other chefs, Bigmouths Kitchen took the main prize of Street Food Dish of the Year with his Wake & Steak dish.

The event also handed out other foodie accolades, including the Street Food Chef of the Year award, which went to Nathan Ritchie from Big Nath’s BBQ for his Asian Steak Burrito, made using ingredients from the event’s sponsors.

The other titles up for grabs included the Major Wings Champion, which went to Jamie Tack from Leytonstone Tavern; the Lee Kum Kee Ultimate Umami Champion, which was won by Vibhor Dayal from My Delhi Streetery; while Ritchie also took home the Bloggers’ Choice Award for his OG Dirty Fries.

‘All about flavour’

Turner’s Wake & Steak winning dish consisted of a beef patty, steak, hashbrown, fried egg, chimichurri sauce and cheddar cheese, all within a homemade onion flake brioche bun, with a side of peppercorn sauce. For Turner, the loaded burger was “all about the flavour.”

“I’m still in shock, I didn’t expect to win,” says Turner. “I was really comfortable throughout the competition until the last five minutes when I realised I was running out of time and then panic ensued.”

The Wake & Steak burger is a recent addition to the Bigmouths Kitchen menu. For Turner, the competition was about more than just winning awards: “I’ve connected with so many people today, that I wouldn’t have without this competition. It’s great to celebrate independent businesses and connect over good food.”

The format

The 2024 Street Food Championships competitors took part in a live cook-off held at the Big Penny Social in London. Finalists included a mix of group and independent traders who were chosen based on their signature dishes. The competition saw them participate in four rounds of cooking, including the Signature, Technical, Major Wings Champion and Lee Kum Kee’s Ultimate Umami Round.

The 2024 Street Food Championships were sponsored by Booker, Conglom, Florette Foodservice, Haagen-Dazs, Lee Kum Kee, Major and Qualiko.
