Culpeper Family welcomes back head chef

Oliver Sharpe will take the reins of the kitchen at The Buxton on Brick Lane.

A London pub group has welcomed a former chef back into the business, with the old employee taking a head chef position at an east London site.

Oliver Sharpe (pictured) will take the reins of the kitchen at The Buxton, run by The Culpeper Family Group, marking a new chapter for the Brick Lane wine bar. 

It will now offer a hyper-seasonal menu alongside its natural wines, focusing on ingredients produced from the group's own urban farm in Deptford, south east London. 

Sharpe started cooking at The Buxton's sister site The Culpeper in November 2019 as chef de partie. Since then, he has worked at the Michelin-starred restaurant Brat, The Culpeper, Toklas, Wildflower in Perth, Australia, and Brooklands Hotel in Surrey.

What's on the menu?

The weekly changing menu at The Buxton will take influences from France and the Mediterranean and will include dishes such as Panisse topped with Whipped Cod’s Roe, Coppa and Remoulade, Chicken Liver Parfait with House Pickles, and Grey Mullet with Risotto Nero and Sea Beet. To finish off, diners can choose from puddings such as Rhubarb and Custard Tart, Chocolate Bavarois with Cream Anglaise, or Mons Cheese with Crackers made in-house and Quince Jelly.

“I am thrilled to be working with The Culpeper Family again and heading up the kitchen at The Buxton," says Sharpe. "We have always shared a very similar ethos - working with world-class suppliers, using responsibly sourced produce and cooking with the seasons, so to be working at The
Buxton and putting my spin on things is a huge privilege."

The Culpeper Family Hospitality Group is a group of four pubs and restaurants across east and north London – The Culpeper near Spitalfields, The Buxton on Brick Lane, The Duke of Cambridge in Islington and The Green in Clerkenwell.

In 2016, The Culpeper was named London Pub & Bar of the Year at the National Pub & Bar Awards. Entries for the 2024 event close on Friday 22 March.

The new menu at The Buxton is available from Monday 18 March.
