Industry leaders share energy saving tips
Industry leaders recently joined forces to discuss energy crisis solutions
A selection of hospitality, sustainability and wellbeing industry leaders recently joined forces to discuss energy crisis solutions to help the on-trade save costs during one of the sector’s most difficult periods.
In a series of videos recorded at the inaugural SmartDispense Energy Well Spent Summit, now available to view for free, hospitality representatives, including Hawksmoor’s Ellie Belsey-Gould and Revolution Bars’ Andy Dyson, reveal top tips on how to significantly reduce energy consumption.
The video series follows the government's announcement of a six-month energy price cap. Despite this, pubs and bars will still need to look at ways to improve energy efficiencies as support is temporary.
“While the government has temporarily capped energy prices for the next six months, saving pub and hospitality businesses significant angst for the time being, the sector still needs to find solutions to cut utility bills," says Richard Stephens, head of Heineken SmartDispense and technical services. "Energy efficiencies and sustainable swaps to reduce waste were central topics at the SmartDispense Energy Well Spent Summit earlier this year, as high costs continue to be a burden for hospitality business owners.
"It is unknown what will happen when the six-month cap lifts, with ministers suggesting a decision will be made in the next three months on whether to provide vulnerable industries such as hospitality with ongoing targeted support. It is therefore pertinent operators utilise this time to review practices and find ways to reduce energy usage and costs to futureproof the sector.”
Top pieces of advice generated from discussions at the event included ensuring all team members are targeted to have a positive impact on their pub’s energy use through KPIs; how making simple changes like turning down thermostats and only using kitchen equipment when required can offer significant savings; and how usage data from energy suppliers allows them to better identify and target areas for biggest savings.
The event will return next year, free to attend for all operators, with more information to be revealed in the coming months.
