Joseph Holt's The Lower Turks Head in Manchester's Northern Quarter opened its doors at the beginning of the month following a lockdown facelift. Now the brewery is offering a prize for anyone who can solve a puzzle surrounding the name of the 16th century pub.
“The pub has always been known as the Lower Turks Head,” explains chief executive Richard Kershaw. “All of which begs the question: was there a higher Turks? And if so, where was it? Or is there some significance in Lower Turks? The rich history of our pubs and the buildings they occupy is such an important part of the Holt story. So it would be wonderful if someone could help us solve the mystery.”
Joseph Holt acquired the pub last winter, saving it from permanent closure and redevelopment as inner city flats. As one of central Manchester's few small hotels, the venue also offers overnight accommodation.
Dating back to 1745, it was once an old stagecoach stop and enjoyed a proud heritage through successive centuries before closing last August.
