World Darts players don pub-sponsored shirts

Five World Darts Championship players will have their tournament shirt sponsored by a local pub.

Five PDC World Darts Championship players will have their tournament shirt sponsored by a local pub of their choice after Sky donated the sponsorship opportunity as part of its Everyone Loves a Local campaign.

The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on local venues, as well as re-enforce the close links between darts, live sport and community pubs.

The five darts players who nominated a Sky Sports pub local to their area included Steve Beaton, Jamie Hughes (pictured right), Ricky Evans, Robert Owen and Lisa Ashton.

Beaton will be sponsored by the King’s Arms in North Walsham; Evans by The Warren in Kettering; Owen by The Royal Oak in Bryncethin, Aston by Hogarths in Bolton; and  Hughes by The Gospel Oak in Tipton.

The Gospel Oak in Tipton is owned by Marston’s and was nominated by Hughes to show the role that it plays within his community. The pub’s name will feature on Hughes' shirt, whose World Darts Championship campaign gets underway when he challenges Jimmy Hendriks on Tuesday 20 December at 7pm.

“We’re delighted to have the pub namechecked by Jamie and we can’t wait to see The Gospel Oak on Sky Sports," says Kirsten Duncan, licensee of The Gospel Oak (pictured left). "We offer a friendly and warm welcome for our customers and having the darts on the TV really adds to the fun and festive atmosphere at this time of year. We’re so excited about the opportunity to sponsor Jamie Hughes, and thrilled we were the pub that he chose to call out. We all love the darts, especially when Jamie is on, and we can’t wait to see our pub’s name on screen.”

Pubs and clubs that offer Sky Sports in their premises can show all the action from the World Championship of Darts on the dedicated Sky Sports Darts channel from 15 December until 3 January.
