Ex-Cubitt House operator to lead new Hampshire pub

The Candover in Hampshire will open in spring 2026.

Come spring 2026, Hampshire will have a brand-new pub with rooms to enjoy, following the saviour of the site by a three local friends.

The pub in Preston Candover, which previously traded as The Purefoy Arms, had been sold with a vision of converting it into residential property.

However, a local trio got together to save the venue. It is currently being restored and will open early next year as The Candover, under the stewardship of operations manager Luke Ashwood, previously of Cubitt House.

"With the amazing Hampshire countryside on our doorstep and so few places to stay nearby, The Candover set out to create something special," he says. "We’ve shaped it to feel timeless and full of character, offering a high standard of hospitality that stays true to its heritage as a traditional pub. It’s a place locals can be proud of and enjoy, as welcoming for a pint at the bar as it is for a weekend away."

Room at the inn

The Candover has 10 bedrooms. There are three Garden Rooms, featuring four-poster beds, Juliet balconies and generous interiors. Two Family Rooms include built-in bunks for children and private patios leading into the garden. Two Large Rooms with bathtubs offer super king-size beds, while there are also two Cosy Rooms and one Comfy Room.

The pub’s menus feature food cooked over the coal and wood open grill. The Dining Room is a 50-cover space with linen-dressed tables, bookable for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Pub, with another 50 seats, is walk-in only and serves pub classics, bar snacks and the à la carte menu.

Outside, the Terrace offers bookable outdoor tables, sat alongside a playground, bench seating and a summer Horsebox Kitchen.
