Pubs see sales boom during key World Cup games

Pubs saw a 33% increase in sales during England’s FIFA World Cup match against the USA.

Pubs and bars across the country saw a 33% increase in sales during England's FIFA World Cup match against the USA on Friday 25 November. 

Although two home nations played on the day, with Wales losing to Iran in the earlier kick-off, England's draw with the US was at peak drinking time, which delivered a robust 32.7% increase in sales versus the last four Fridays.

With Wales playing England at 7pm on Tuesday 29 November, pubs and bars are set to capitalise on extra visits once again.

According to data from the Oxford Partnership Market Watch, on 25 November a total of 13.1m pints were sold across the UK, with the average pub serving 430 pints of draught beer or cider on the day.

Compared to an average Friday, an extra 106 pints were sold in every pub, with England fans drinking an additional 128 pints. 

Consumer dwell time increased by 14 minutes, allowing for an extra drink to be consumed, thereby increasing spend per head.  Occupancy rates also increased by 26% compared to an average Friday.
