Pub changes name for climate action

The change is part of the pub’s efforts to get people on board with tackling climate change.

A Worcestershire pub has carried out a temporary name change as part of its efforts to get people on board with tackling climate change.

The Fleece Inn in Bretforton has partnered with the National Trust to become temporarily known as The Green Man between 26 September and 2 October, when it will host a series of green-themed activities to mark The Great Big Green Week, which is a nationwide celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Talking about climate change is often avoided because it is a complex and serious topic, and this week-long initiative is not only about getting people to start talking more often about it, but to take something away that they can do in their own life to make a positive difference to the environment," says Nigel Smith, landlord at The Fleece Inn.

The week culminates with a three-hour long community celebration where visitors can meet local people who are helping to tackle climate change, including speakers from the National Trust, Worcester Repair Cafe and local climate action groups.

“Climate change is the single biggest threat to the precious landscapes and historic houses we care for – and one of the most powerful things we can do, as individuals, is to talk about it," says Joel Silver, climate campaigns manager for the National Trust. "This is the idea behind The Green Man; giving people an opportunity and a space to have climate change conversations with their friends, family and local community.

“The climate crisis can feel overwhelming, but the small actions we take as individuals, and the conversations we have with each other, can help achieve big changes and show governments and businesses what kind of action is needed.”
