The White Horse in Chilgrove, West Sussex, has been named as the best pub in the UK, after scooping the top accolade at last night’s National Pub & Bar Awards.
The countryside pub, which is situated at the bottom of the South Downs, was chosen from 94 venues, which were all at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly on 23 May to collect their awards for being the best pubs in their respective counties.
After The White Horse was announced as the South East Pub of the Year, landlord Richard Miller soon found himself back on stage to collect the prestigious National Pub & Bar of the Year title from host Nigel Barden, rounding off a triumphant evening for the West Sussex pub.
“This feels amazing,” says Miller. “We drive the team really hard and we demand a lot from them, so to be recognised because of them is brilliant. This award is for the team and all their hard work. I’m really proud. This award will be fantastic for business.”
“Awards like this are a great way to be recognised as an employer, and a great way to find the new members of your team,” adds Fabien Garrigues, operations manager of The White Horse. “It’s obviously a good way to attract new customers because it’s how people will find their next destination for a weekend away with their family and loved ones.
“Summertime is coming and it’s a busy time of year, so we are going to need to find some extra staff quickly as now we are hopefully going to get lots of extra customers! We’d better be ready.”
The operators of 94 pubs and bars from around the UK, which were named as the best in their counties back in April, attended the 2018 National Pub & Bar Awards. Each of those businesses was up for a Regional Award, as well as the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year title. The full Regional Winners list can be found below.
“What makes the National Pub & Bar Awards so special is that everyone in that theatre was there to celebrate being the best in their county,” says Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the awards. “The occasion is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to acknowledge the incredible work that these businesses do for us all – our pubs and bars are a huge asset to local communities, as well as the whole of the country. Congratulations to all of the 2018 National Pub & Bar Awards winners, but a special mention to The White Horse at Chilgrove. What a stunning pub operation they have going there.”
Also picking up an award on the night was James Graham, executive chef of The Pointer, Brill, who won Samsung’s Pub Chef of the Year.
Budweiser also launched its King of Pubs campaign on the night with ex-England footballer Martin Keown, in time for pubs to mark the FIFA World Cup 2018.
The National Pub & Bar Awards 2018 is sponsored by Samsung and its supporting partners are Jack Rabbit, Budweiser, Lamb Weston, Nescafé Azera and Walkers.
